An all-in-one app for workplace users to feel more connected to their company and colleagues

Workplace Mobile App

Brief

This project was an internal research initiative focused on exploring the need and usability of a workplace app designed to improve the employee experience in a hybrid work environment.

The goal was to assess how a unified app could simplify access to company information, documentation, and news while also enhancing visibility of colleagues and teams. The app aimed to promote better collaboration, connection, and engagement across departments, providing a smoother, more cohesive way of working in a flexible, modern workplace.

Discovery & Workshops

To kick off discovery, I facilitated a cross-team workshop bringing together employees from different departments to brainstorm ideas around useful content, tools, and interactive features for the app. The session encouraged open discussion on workplace challenges, information gaps, and preferred ways of accessing resources.

Using collaborative exercises, we captured a wide range of insights, which I then organised into clear themes and content areas — grouping ideas under categories such as company knowledge, team visibility, communication tools, and collaborative features. This helped shape early priorities and informed the structure of the app moving forward.

Journey Mapping

Following the workshop, I used the grouped insights to create initial user journey maps. These mapped out typical employee tasks and interactions with the app, helping to visualise pain points, highlight opportunities for improvement, and identify where key features and content would provide the most value.

Wireframes & Prototype

Building on the journey maps, I created a set of low-fidelity wireframes to outline the core layout, navigation flows, and key features of the app. These wireframes were developed into a prototype that allowed users to tap through the main sections and interactions. The focus was on testing structure and usability, providing a foundation for gathering early user feedback in the next testing phase.

The emphasis was on AI generated results, personalisation for feeds, floor mapping and booking, integrated HR tools for full management and mental health first-aid access, amongst others.

User Research & Interviews

With support from the research team, we conducted one-hour user interviews with 10 individuals employed at large organisations, using the prototype as a discussion and testing tool. These sessions explored usability, expectations, and overall impressions of the app.

Interviews were transcribed, with insights grouped into key themes and common pain points. This feedback directly informed the iterative design process, allowing us to refine and improve the wireframes based on real user needs and behaviours.

Hi-Fi Concepts

Using insights from user testing and iterative feedback, I developed high-fidelity concepts. I applied AA accessible standards throughout, considering font choices, colour contrast, sizing, and navigation. The visual design aligned with the company’s brand — modern and vibrant — while prioritising consistency and predictability with patterns to ensure a user-friendly, inclusive experience.
